CAMBRIDGE LOWER SECONDARY & CHECK POINT

Cambridge Lower Secondary is typically for learners aged 11 to 14 years. It gives schools a flexible framework for developing skills and understanding in English as a first or second language, mathematics, science, Cambridge Global Perspectives and ICT Starters.

Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum

Cambridge Lower Secondary offers schools a flexible curriculum that can be developed to suit their needs. There is a curriculum framework for each subject English, English as a second language, mathematics and science providing a clear teaching structure. Many schools use the integrated assessments to monitor learners’ progress.

Each curriculum framework is designed to engage learners in an active and creative learning journey.

English

Cambridge Lower Secondary English enables learners to communicate confidently and effectively and to develop the skills to respond to a range of information, media and texts with understanding and enjoyment. Learners who follow this framework will develop a first language competency in English based on a curriculum designed to be successful in any culture and to promote cross-cultural understanding.

English as a second language

This curriculum develops learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. It has been developed in conjunction with Cambridge Assessment English and is based on the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), used across the world to map learners’ progress in English.

Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum framework explores five content areas: number, geometry, measure, handling data and problem solving. This curriculum focuses on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject.

Science

This curriculum framework covers four content areas: scientific enquiry, biology, chemistry and physics. Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning, investigating, recording and analysing data. Environmental awareness and some history of science are also part of the curriculum.

Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint

Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests have been designed to assess learners at the end of Cambridge Lower Secondary. They are available in English, English as a second language, mathematics and science, and give valuable feedback on learners’ strengths and weaknesses before they progress to the next stage of education.

The tests are marked in Cambridge and provide schools with an external international benchmark for learner performance. Each learner receives a statement of achievement and a diagnostic feedback report, giving schools detailed information and parents extra trust in the feedback they receive.

We hold two Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint test series each year, in May and October. The tests cover all major areas of learning in the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum frameworks for English, English as a second language, mathematics and science.

The tests are marked in Cambridge and provide schools with an external international benchmark for learner performance. Cambridge Primary Checkpoint Global Perspectives students produce a team project that is assessed by teachers and externally moderated by Cambridge International. Each learner receives a statement of achievement and a diagnostic feedback report, giving schools detailed information and parents extra trust in the feedback they receive.
